Random Bits of Goodness

So...Chad is out of town (and if you are a creepy blog stalker please don't take this opportunity to come and rob us, I am armed with a stick Harry Potter wand).
I have finished three out of four Halloween costumes, and the pieces of my cupcake baker's hat are staring at me from my sewing machine across the table.

What better choice do I have but to sit here with you folks and write a random blog?

I knew you would agree.
This is why the good Lord sent me sisters.
Thanks for breakfast Jennifer!

I take this as a sign that Chad needs to be released from the Bishopric soon, since I thought only pregnant women made the mistake of putting ice cream in the refrigerator (or milk in the pantry...but I wouldn't know anything about that).
My first thought when I saw this photo was "Oh good, my bald spot wasn't showing that day."
My second thought was, "Sophie is so stinkin cute!"
Just so you know where my priorities are.

Trevor testing to move up to a green-belt-black-stripe last week.
See how his tongue is sticking out?
Apparently he does that when he is concentrating.

Yes, our child sleeps on the floor (don't ask).
More importantly, did you notice the ace bandage wrapped around his head?  If I had to guess I would say that was the day he had the mole removed and he was afraid his brain would leak out.
HA!
Just kidding.
It was to hold the gauze pad in place over the stitches (that were keeping his brain from leaking out).

Kade and Sophie were eager to "help" me switch their wardrobes from summer to fall.  It took twice as long as it needed to because they kept insisting on doing a quality control check of the inside of Kade's dresser.

We had one hail of a hail storm last week, I finally got fed up with roofing/construction companies coming to our door to solicit us so I made a sign (that I didn't take a picture of because it is pretty boring) telling them that we are not interested.
So far I am happy to say that 90% of the companies who have come since then to solicit our street are literate.

These are the hailstones (is that even a word?) that Kade and I scrambled to save after the storm.  Thanks to this storm we now have to replace all of the siding on the south side of our house, it will cost us around $400.
 Our insurance deductible is $500.
Why do we have insurance again?

So there you have it, my friends.

This post is brought to you by the letter
P...as in Procrastination!

Blessed

I woke up this morning at around 5:30 and couldn't go back to sleep.  Some disturbing things happened this week that I couldn't seem to get out of my mind enough to take advantage of the last hour of sleep that was available to me.

Instead I lay there wishing I could go back in time several months knowing what I know now
and do a few things differently.

Kade came in around 7:00 and crawled into our bed and snuggled up against me,
looking for warmth probably.

We cuddled a few seconds and then I asked him if he'd had good dreams.

He said that he had.

I asked him what he had dreamed about.

He got kind of excited and said, "Jesus!"

"Wow, what did he say to you?" I asked.

"He said I am a child of God!" was his reply.

At that moment the peace that I had been searching for finally calmed my soul and I remembered that
I, too, am a child of God.

I am thankful for a loving Heavenly Father who sends me little reminders when I need them, and that he has blessed me with such a special little messenger who brings me joy and offers me unconditional love.

Buzzed

One night last week when we went to check on Sophie before we went to bed we found this:

Remember this post?

Well apparently when Chad put her to bed earlier he couldn't find her "Baby", so he grabbed the first soft thing he could find.

We had a good chuckle about how Buzz is almost as big as she is and then we hit the hay ourselves.

The next morning when I went in to get Sophie, she was sitting up in her crib with Buzz on her lap with a look on her face like "Wow. That must have been one. wild. party."

Funny how quickly a baby will attach to an object and use it for comfort.
But it is good to know that she'll accept a substitute if she has to!

Poor Blake...the Saga Continues

Can I just say (once again) what a great kid this guy is?

He is a pretty good kid.  He gets good grades and doesn't fight me on doing his homework.  He loves to read and can now read a Harry Potter book almost as fast as I can...we're talking just a few days.

He is a really great big brother, his brothers and sister look up to him and try to be just like him.  He is willing to help me with the baby, even if it means holding her down while I try to put diaper rash ointment on her sore little bum.  I thought I might lose him that time, but he squinted up his eyes and looked the other way and put all of his body weight into keeping her on the table (she is seriously strong for such a tiny little thing!).

One afternoon we went disc golfing and decided to play up in the woods where we don't normally go.  Blake launched his disc and it hit a tree, bounced off and smacked into Sophie (she was sitting in the stroller in what we thought was a safe distance from where they were throwing).  It didn't hit her very hard, but Chad and I both immediately went to check on her.  I think she could tell by our reaction that she was supposed to be upset, so she screwed up her little face and started to cry.  Chad got her out and easily comforted her, but I noticed that Blake was a little ways off from all of us with his hands over his face.  Turns out, he was a lot more upset than we all were at the thought that he might have hurt his little sister.  We calmed him down and showed him that she was fine.  It really touched my heart to see that he has so much love and compassion
 for her.

Blake has had a pretty rough year.  Last year at about this time he was attacked by a dog at a missionary farewell.  He still bears several scars on his back and is very skittish around big dogs.
He got his tonsils and adenoids removed in March, got smacked in the eye with a baseball last month and three staples in his noggin after an accident a few weeks ago during a football game at recess.  He has learned to be pretty brave when it comes to pain, and has hardly cried during most of his ordeals.

He has had a large mole above his left ear for quite a long time.  I really noticed it about a year ago when I gave him a short haircut because normally it is covered by hair.  I decided to watch it and see what happened.  I mentioned it to our pediatrician and he told me to watch it and if it continued to grow and change to take him to a dermatologist.  When I gave him his haircut for the beginning of the school year I got very concerned when I noticed that it had gotten a lot bigger and was looking different from what it started out like.  I made an appointment with the dermatologist, who took one look at it and said that it needed to come off.

She set up an appointment with a plastic surgeon since it is in his hair line and we didn't want a huge ugly scar that would be with him forever.  When I took him in for the consultation the surgeon basically said that it was probably nothing, and it was up to me whether I wanted to have him remove it.

I told him that given the family history of both my father in law and brother in law having had skin cancer, I would feel better if it came off.  He didn't fight me and scheduled the procedure.

The next few weeks I wrestled with self doubt.  What if it really is nothing and I am putting the poor kid through another procedure that may end up being a waste of everyone's time and money?  I prayed for guidance and Chad and I discussed the best course of action.

We decided to go forward with the procedure.  Blake was such a rock, even though I could tell he was pretty nervous.  The dermatologist told him that he would be put under general anesthesia for it, which he was fine with because he did that for his tonsillectomy.  However, when we went to see Dr. Shack (the plastic surgeon) we were told that it would just be a local and that I could put some special numbing stuff on it that he prescribed (and that I had to go to two different pharmacies for...Boo Sam's Club for making me wait 45 minutes and then deciding to tell me you don't carry it!).

I am kicking myself in a huge way right now because I left my camera (and my cell phone) in the car so I never got a picture of the offending mole.  Just suffice it to say that it was pretty large and noticeable.  The nurse cleaned the area around Blake's ear and draped blue towels all over him so that only his little face stuck out.  He had to hold perfectly still so nothing would shift and become un-sterile (spell check is telling me that is not a word...but I am using it anyway.  Take THAT spellcheck!).  Dr. Shack came in and worked his magic and less than twenty minutes later Blake had four stitches over his left ear.  I might just have to go back to school to become a nurse because I watched the whole fascinating process from down by Blake's feet.

Blake was such a rock!  He said it hurt when they put the numbing shot in, but otherwise it was no big deal.  Both the nurses and the doctor told Blake that he handled the whole thing much better than the majority of the adults they take care of.

Here it is a few days later.  Blake insisted on playing in his baseball game that night, so I had to put a gauze pad over it and wrap stretchy tape around his head.  Forgot my camera then too...I am losing my touch!

Now for the part that makes my heart skip a beat when I think about it.

We were told to call one week later to get the results of the biopsy.

I called and received a call back from the nurse within about an hour.  She sounded really serious and said, "He said to tell you that the mole was benign,
but [why is there always a 'but'?] there were atypical lesions in it."

I didn't know exactly what that meant, but from the tone of her voice and the fact that my heart started racing told me that it wasn't just nothing.  She went on to tell me that they removed the entire mole so we didn't need to worry about it any longer, which is a relief I guess.

I Googled atypical moles as soon as I got off the phone and learned:

"An atypical or dysplastic (abnormal, irregular) mole or lesion are also known as atypical melanocytic hyperplasia, atypical mole, or dysplastic mole. The majority of these moles or lesions are benign (non cancerous). Some have a significant risk of actually being a melanoma or developing into melanoma. "

So basically it had a significant chance of becoming cancer in the next few years.

In my head I am freaking out.

He is not even 10 years old and that particular part of his body is generally covered by hair so it doesn't see much sun.  What if I hadn't noticed it?  What if I had ignored it and not taken him to the dermatologist?  What if I had listened to the plastic surgeon and not had him remove it?  There are so many what ifs here that freak me out, I can't begin to put words to them all.

In the end I am so grateful for the fact that I was guided by the Spirit to make the decisions that I did.  The what ifs could eat me up inside, but I know for a fact that the Lord is watching over us and answering our prayers.

I have started reading a new series called "The Geat and Terrible" by Chris Stewart.  I have really only just read the first book which centers on the war in Heaven.  It talks quite a bit about how the Lord saved the strongest spirits to come to Earth at the Last Days to fight Satan when he is at his strongest.  The last page of the book is about Satan surveying the Earth and seeing the valiant spirits that were saved to fight him.  He called them the "Great Ones".
 The last few paragraphs say:

"He laughed in his anger.  He was ready for them.  He was more powerful!  Let them come with their Great Ones.  He was Terrible now.

The Great and the Terrible had assembled.

Let the battle begin."

When I think about the trials that Blake has been through this past year, and how much stronger and more ready he is for the trials that will come, my heart aches for him.

He is a pretty Great kid.

I sure hope he knows how much he is loved by both his Heavenly parents and his Earthly family.

Kid Talk

I haven't done a post of the funny things that my kids have said for a while, so I thought I would throw one together just for kicks.

Kade while walking out of the Dollar General after I bought him a Batman jogging suit (who knew they'd have  cool clothes there? Not me!):

"You the best mom ever, and I'm gonna tell you that forty times!"

Blake during a conversation about how his grandpa lost his job with Chartis Insurance yesterday:

"Hey! He should get a job at Geico!  Then he could work with the Geico lizard."

Kade and my nephew, Campbell, while petting the stray Schnauzer that we took pity on and decided to feed at my mom's house:

Campbell: "Oh! Her wagging her tail!"
Kade: "Awwww, her have a mini tail!" (Her tail was docked, so it was just a little stump.)

Blake and Trevor while looking through a Party City ad that came with pages and pages of Halloween costume ideas:

Trevor: "Hey! Dad should be Gumby for Halloween!"
Blake: "No, that's not a good costume for Dad."
Trevor: "Here's one!  He could be 'Pimp'!"  (Chad was proud.)

Trevor was telling Kade about the Great War in Heaven tonight in the car.  He was explaining about how all of the people who chose Satan's plan didn't get a body and they were cast out with Satan.  Then he got a little glint in his eye (that I happened to look up and see in the rear view mirror):

"You know, Obama really should be up there with Satan right now!"

That was for you Dad!

I know that some of you may be Obama fans, but Trevor sure isn't!

Sorry if that offends you, but "To each his own".

And finally...

If you are drinking something you might want to just go ahead and swallow it before you read this next one.

I'll wait.

Are you ready?

We recently had a Family Home Evening about the Great War in Heaven (hence that last little nugget of knowledge from Trevor) in which we went over how we all made a choice to follow Jesus' plan and then we received a body when we were sent to Earth.  Trevor got all excited at this prospect and exclaimed:

"Oh yeah!  Then we all had to go to this island in New York and check in and get tested by doctors and stuff!!"

Ummmmm.

Apparently he had a lesson in school that very day about Ellis Island.

When Chad and I stopped laughing (with him, not at him, of course), we explained that it was a little bit different.  We are nothing if not responsible parents after all.

At least we know he is paying attention somewhere along the way!

9 Months

When I typed that title the thought ran through my mind, "Hmmm...what if they think I am pregnant?"

Well....

I'm not.

Sophie turned 9 months old last week.
Or maybe it was two weeks ago...whatever.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but life around here is nothing if not crazy.

The past four days Miss Sophie has graced us with a nice little taste of what little girls can be made of, and let me tell you, we can can't wait till she is a teenager cause she may not be the queen of drama, but she is definitely the princess or at least a grand duchess!

Ya can't really blame her though.  She had a two week cold that went into an ear infection, diarrhea from the antibiotics for the ear infection (though that has lasted so long I am now thinking she has a virus on top of it), diaper rash from the diarrhea , and I discovered this morning that she is cutting her first tooth.

You tell it, Sister!

Anyway.

At her nine month appointment she weighed in at 15.12 lbs and was 27 inches long.  Or is that tall, since she prefers to be standing all the time?

She has fallen from the 10th % in weight to the 5th and from 40th % in height to 28%.

Looks like she really is my Mini Me after all, poor thing!

Stay tuned for a new installment of "Poor Blake".
That is, if I can muster up the energy tomorrow...or maybe the next day.  Fall Break is upon us and has brought some seriously gorgeous weather that I just can't seem to justify staying indoors for!
